Superdrug starts delivering Mounjaro weight loss drug to patients’ homes

Superdrug has today said it will deliver its Mounjaro weight loss treatment to patients’ homes through its online doctor service.

The treatment was only available at a health clinic or pharmacy because it needs to be stored between two and eight degrees Celsius but can now be delivered to patients’ homes via what Superdrug said was its “temperature-controlled express cold delivery service.”

The pharmacy chain said the price for one four-week course of Mounjaro in 2.5mg and 5mg strengths starts at £215. It claimed weight loss prescriptions in its pharmacies have increased by 25 per cent since it launched Wegovy in September 2023 and a further 57 per cent since it launched Mounjaro in February 2024.

“In the first two weeks of launch, Superdrug Online Doctor provided almost 700 per cent more Mounjaro prescriptions in comparison to Wegovy prescriptions during its first two weeks of launch,” Superdrug said.

Dr Babak Ashrafi, a GP at Superdrug Online Doctor, said the Mounjaro service was “similar to the Wegovy service in terms of administration as an injection with four doses in each pen that targets appetite suppression.”

He conceded that in terms of efficacy, “there aren’t any direct trials between the two medications for weight loss so it’s difficult to compare the two accurately.”

However, he said: “There are separate studies that highlight each medication’s results, showing that using Mounjaro after 72 weeks, 96 per cent of those on 15mg lost at least five per cent weight, and with Wegovy after 68 weeks, 83.5 per cent of those on 2.4mg lost at least five per cent weight.”
